Arsenal is showing a theme in this transfer window – fixing overdue problems with unconventional choices. That would mean that Henrikh Mkhitaryan is next.

This transfer window (and it’s not even the transfer window yet) has shown unusual activity from Arsene Wenger. Arsenal have already gained their long-overdue holding midfielder and now they have supposedly amped up their game with a brand new striker in Jamie Vardy. These moves are coming in quickly and they are completely against he normal run of flow for Wenger.

Most people would have told you prior to the season ending that they expected Wenger to go down to the wire in the transfer window and maybe sneak off with one signing at the end. However, it has been the complete opposite. Everything supporters have been calling for, Wenger has been granting them.

So much so that it’s time to turn to what comes next. With a shielding midfielder and an alternative striker, Arsenal now have to look out wide. Alexis Sanchez is obviously pre-established, but relying on the youthfulness of Alex Iwobi is a shaky ordeal. He proved to be a spunky young whippersnapper, but there were some real stinkers as well.

With the Ox and Joel Campbell as the other two options, it’s clear that a little veteran infusion to lead the way would be welcomed. And so I return to the man that I think could make all the difference in the world, Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The versatile Dortmund midfielder has refused to sign an extension and his agent, Mino Raiola, indicated that they are evaluating his future prospects.

Well, according to the Sun, that future is at Arsenal.

With somewhere between £20m-£30m dropped for Xhaka and Vardy, separately, another £20m on Mkhitaryan would still keep Arsenal well under £100m spent and give them plenty of room to find a defender.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The Armenian midfielder is going for surprisingly cheap considering that he contributed to nearly 40 goals for Dortmund, all the while securing a spot on the Bundesliga team of the season.

To make matters even more believable, the Sun is reporting that Mkhitaryan is only targeting a deal worth £85,000 a week. Something that Arsenal can afford with room to spare.

Mkhitaryan is the perfect fit for what the Gunners need. He offers a Mesut Ozil-like creative spark from wide positions, he has the speed and penetration of Alexis and he is no stranger to stroking home a goal or two or eighteen. There isn’t anything the Armenian can’t do, as his work rate is impeccable as well.

Not only that, but at 27 years of age, Mkhiratyan is reaching his peak. If he doesn’t want to spend that time at Dortmund, Arsenal have to be there to snatch him up. Rumor has it that the German outfit is prepared to let his contract run out rather than sell him, but money has a strange way of convincing people otherwise.
