Sol Campbell has recently backed Arsene Wenger amidst a host of fan protests about the Arsenal manager’s performance over the past decade.

Sol Campbell is an Arsenal legend. The center half, who was integral to the Gunners’ success in the early ’00s, had a great career with Arsenal, enjoying a particularly close relationship with Arsene Wenger.

He has now recently spoken out backing his old boss amidst a host of fan protests. The “Wenger Out” campaign has gained steam in recent years due to the failures in the latter half of seasons. Arsenal have had a mental frailty that has hindered their success over the past decade, particular when fighting for the Premier League title, and the blame for this is mainly placed at the door of Arsene Wenger.

However, when speaking to the Guardian, Sol Campbell has backed his old boss, stating:

"“Everyone’s got to realize how much he’s done for Arsenal. He revolutionized the club. Yes, everyone wants to win the Premier League and Champions League. It takes time. He’s done incredibly well for the amount of money he’s spent – look at Man United, who have spent £250m in two years and have only gone sideways. It’s not easy at all. Arsenal and Arsène will know when it’s time to move on. It’ll happen naturally, and that’s how it should be because he has given so much to the club.”"

Sol Campbell is spot on here. Arsene Wenger has done a magnificent job to simply keep Arsenal competitive over the past few years with the disparity in money that has been invested in the transfer window. In the age of Manchester City, United and Chelsea’s big bucks, Wenger’s ability to maintain a squad that, while it did not win as many trophies as perhaps expected, was competitive having had significantly less investment.

Wenger does not get the credit that he deserves as Arsenal boss, however, when he does eventually leave the club, it will be the next two or three seasons that will dictate how he is remembered.

Now Arsenal have the financial clout to match their Premier League rivals. And now, fourth place is not good enough. Arsenal exist to win titles, and Wenger will need to deliver them. Sol Campbell certainly believes he can deliver, but only time will tell.
