Arsenal are set to loan out Wojciech Szczesny to Roma once again, and the move would be smart for the Gunners.

For many years, really since the departures of David Seaman and Jens Lehman, goalkeeper has been a position of great weakness for Arsenal. However, after the recent signings of David Ospina and Petr Cech in consecutive Summer windows, the Gunners possess the best trio of goalkeepers in the Premier League.

However, with only one player starting every week and no reason to rotate without injuries, it is very difficult to keep three quality keepers happy. There were musings that David Ospina was unhappy with his reserve role, never mind Szczesny as a third string.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Something has got to give, and while Szczesny is still young, for a keeper, it is a no-brainer to loan him out so he gets regular first team football to learn and develop as a player. The reports state that Szczesny is set to return to Roma for another season, something that wholeheartedly makes a lot of sense for all parties involved.

Firstly for Roma, they will receive the services of a developing and talented keeper without paying a transfer fee. Szczesny meanwhile will get regular playing time, something that he wouldn’t receive if he stayed at the Emirates, and will be able to improve as a keeper, learning from his mistakes and gaining valuable first team experience.

Furthermore, Arsenal, while enjoying a world class goalkeeper in Petr Cech, do need an option for the future. This loan move will allow Szczesny to prove that he could be that man. He certainly has the talent, but he needs to learn, cut out mental errors that  tarnish his game and progress into a more commanding and calming presence.

Szczesny is an erratic keeper. He will make wonderful saves and then commit cardinal sins. His athletic ability is exceptional, he is good from crosses and makes himself big in one-on-one situations. However, he does have mental lapses. He becomes cocky and complacent and it certainly has cost Arsenal games in the past.

These are, though, mistakes that can be eradicated. Through good coaching, learning from mistakes and maturing as he advances in years, Szczesny can develop into the top quality goalkeeper that Arsenal need and will be able to inherit Cech’s role as Arsenal’s number one between the sticks.
