Arsenal are heavily pursuing Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy by activating his £20 million release clause. The legend that is Thierry Henry has had his say on the situation and he is absolutely spot on.

If there is a man who knows the virtues of moving to Arsenal it is Thierry Henry. As a talented youngster, Henry was touted as a pacy winger with an ability to score goals. However, while struggling to break into the Juventus starting eleven, Arsene Wenger saw the young Frenchman as the future of Arsenal.

Thankfully for Arsenal fans worldwide, Wenger was right in his assessment of the left winger. Le Professeur altered Herny’s position, playing him as a central striker rather than a wide man, and the French international proceeded to become one of the very best players in the world, Arsenal’s record goalscorer and arguably the Gunners’ greatest ever player.

Henry, thereby, understands the success he had in moving to Highbury. Now Jamie Vardy has the same opportunity, and the Arsenal legend is suggesting that Leicester City’s goalscoring machine would be wise to accept such a move.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Speaking to Radio 5 Live, Henry stated:

“He’s 29, right? You have Arsenal coming for you and you’re telling them you’re going to think about it? All I can say is if I was playing for Leicester and I had Arsenal coming, I would have gone but I’m not Jamie Vardy.  I would have walked down the M1 to Arsenal. If your agent’s speaking to Arsenal the first question is do you want to go to Arsenal? Yes? Then what is it going to take to get me there? That should be done and dusted. Then to turn round and say ‘I’m going to think about it’, I don’t think Arsene Wenger is going to like that.”

Henry, as an Arsenal legend and as someone who enjoyed great success with the club is always going to say that moving to the Emirates is a move in the right direction for anyone’s career. However, in this instance, he is spot on.

While Vardy had great success at Leicester and he owes much of his development to the Foxes, the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in Europe does not rear its head all that often. Moreover, at the age of 29, Vardy may not ever get another chance of playing for a club of the caliber of Arsenal.

This is exactly what Henry is referring to in the above comments. To be able to join a team where they are consistently challenging for trophies, consistently in a position to challenge for the Premier League and consistently qualify for the Champions League is an opportunity that cannot be offered to him by Leicester.

While the Foxes should be praised and celebrated for such an incredible year, the seasonal consistency simply does not exist at club. Henry points to this as a huge contributing factor as to why Vardy should join Arsenal this Summer, and he is absolutely spot on.
