Arsenal: Mesut Ozil’s Defiance Truly Wonderful
Arsenal’s mercurial midfielder Mesut Ozil is often criticized for his apparent laziness. However, his recent defiance against such critics is wonderful to see and sets him up for another fantastic season this coming year.
The style of Mesut Ozil is something that has been heavily discussed over the years. Some are huge detractors of his apparent lazy running while others look to the effect that he has on the game as a whole to see his true quality.

This debate is now no longer just heard in Arsenal circles. It has spread to the realms of the German national team, with some of the media calling for Ozil to change his style of play and put more of his apparent effort in.

Ozil was not willing to accept such criticisms, stating:
"“Quite honestly, I don’t care what others say. There will always be people who voice their opinion, mostly it’s negative. I don’t know if they have to say it or not. When a former player or whoever wants to make headlines, it just bounces off me. Like I said, the coach’s opinion matters: Mr Low tells me the truth. How much we run, how many springs, you can ask the Bundestrainer [Low], I am always in the top five. The other thing is just personal, it’s aura. We are all in our own skin."
These comments are truly wonderful to hear. People who criticize Ozil’s game simply don’t understand his style of play. His apparent lack of effort is made murkier by the fact that he is always on the move.
Ozil’s running does not come from high intensity stats. Rather, his style of play is relentless. It is why he is so hard to defend against. With or without the ball, he is always thinking, always moving, always trying to create.
It truly is exceptional to watch him when he’s at his best, and luckily, Arsenal fans have had the upmost pleasure of watching a genius at work this past season. And yet, many have still found ways to criticize his performances.

It is, then, a very good thing that Mesut is so defiant against such critics. He is fantastically stubborn in the belief that his methods are successful. So Mesut, don’t ever change. Please.
