Arsenal are being linked to a variety of wingers throughout this Summer, however many of the names that are in the conversation are not particularly exciting ones. One such name is Quincy Promes.

This Summer, if Arsenal and Arsene Wenger have any aspirations in winning the league, then they must add to their squad. However, unlike previous years where numbers and depth were issues, Arsenal are actually blessed with a large squad, laced with quality throughout.

Rather, the additions that must be made this Summer must add quality, not quantity, to the squad, and in particular the starting eleven. In fact, after the signing of Granit Xhaka before the Euros, Arsenal could feasibly add only two more players and be set for the upcoming year.

Consequently, bringing in good but not great players should not be something that is being entertained by the club. And yet, many of the players that are being linked with Arsena’s right wing recruitment are exactly this, good, but not great players.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

One such name who has recently been reported to be an object of Arsene’s desire is Dutch goal scoring winger Quincy Promes.

Promes has an outstanding goal scoring. Since moving to Spartak Moscow from FC Twente two Summers ago for around £11 million, Promes has scored an impressive 31 goals in 58 games. That is a good strike rate for a center forward, never mind a winger, and it certainly highlights an enticing prospect.

However, the majority of these goals come in the Russian league, a competition that is significantly weaker than the top leagues in Europe, he has little experience of playing in Europe against the very best and is not an established, world class winger.

And that is the crux of the issue. Two or three seasons ago, a signing like Promes would have been welcomed by many as Arsenal were not only in need of quality, but also quantity. Now that is not true, and Wenger needs to prioritize quality over quantity.

With players like Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alex Iwobi all already in the squad, buying another winger who is good with the potential to be better is not really in Arsenal’s interests.

If the Gunners went and brought in a ready made world class winger, say a Mahrez, then such a move could be defended. However, Quincy Promes, while talented, is not such an established player. He is not necessarily plug and in play ready, and consequently, would be a wasted investment.
