Arsenal have been heavily linked with moves for both Alexandre Lacazette and Alvaro Morata over the past month. There’s no debate as to who is the superior signing.

When a club like Arsenal has a need as universally accepted as Arsenal do with a new striker, then they are automatically linked to every possible solution to that need. It is natural to expect a big European team to be able to attract the best players in the world. They have the financial capacity, the profile and the fan base to bring big names in, and that is why they are often linked with every player under the sun who could remotely help improve the squad.

In their hunt for a new forward, Arsenal are in such a position this Summer. The rumor mill has been churning some expected and some rather surprising names. From Gonzalo Higuain to Romelu Lukaku, Takuma Asano (who Arsenal have now signed) to Robin Van Persie, there are very few strikers who may be available this Summer who haven’t seen their names next to Arsenal in the heading of some tabloid paper.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Two names who have strongly linked with a move to the Emirates are Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette, and it is looking more and more likely that if Arsenal do indeed invest in a new striker this Summer, then it will be one of these two. But, who would be the better signing of the two of them?

While many may have think otherwise, there is actually one far superior option. For those that have been reading my articles, you may be able to guess where I’m going with this. That is, that Alexandre Lacazette is, in no uncertain terms, a much better addition to the squad than his Spanish counterpart.

While Morata is clearly a talented player, he has been struggling to force his way into the Juventus side due to Mario Mandzukic’s performances this season. When he has played, Morata has not looked all that special, only scoring 7 league goals in 16 games, with another 18 sub appearances. Whatever way you look at it, that is not very impressive whatsoever, and now that Real Madrid has activated a buy back clause, his fee will be up towards, if not beyond, the £50 million mark, a truly astronomical figure for a player of decent, but nothing more, quality.

Lacazette, on the other hand, while only playing in the French, which must be taken into account, has a much more impressive record, scoring 27 and 21 league goals in 33 and 34 games respectively over the past two seasons. Not only are they far superior numbers to Morata’s but they display a consistency that is badly needed at the Emirates. Moreover, not only is Lacazette a better goal scorer, he would also likely be cheaper, with a fee reported to be in the £34 million range due to a release clause in his contract.

When considering these two players, you end up with a natural goal scorer who possesses electrifying pace and a lethal finish or a decent player who will have the odd good game here and there and for £20 million more. It is really is no debate.
