Arsenal: Time To Get Jazzed Up For Neven Subotic
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal need defense, but all the links have run dry. So we have to get excited about every link. Let’s get jazzed up about the possibility of Neven Subotic at Arsenal!
The defensive predicament at Arsenal is getting dire. With all potential defensive links drying up, it really is getting to the point that with each new link, we need to cling on for dear life and hope it progresses.

It is essentially the exact opposite of the striker rumors. Arsenal are linked to a plethora of strikers and only like, one or two of them are good, hearty links.
What I wouldn’t give for a plethora of links to central defenders.
As it stands, all of Arsenal’s links are dead. Kostas Manolas has gone quiet. Mateo Musacchio has simmered. Kalidou Koulibaly is going to cost a small fortune and looks to be headed to Chelsea.
The only link that remains is a link that (please allow me to toot my own horn) I was hoping would develop when I first heard of his potential move to Liverpool. Naturally, I am speaking of Neven Subotic.
Conveniently enough, of all the defenders linked, Subotic may be the best option. For starters, he isn’t going to cost Koulibaly-like money. He probably wouldn’t cost more than £15m. Which, all things considered, is ridiculously cheap.
Subotic was the sturdy partner of Mats Hummels. The two combined to form one of the most dynamic partnerships in the business. And as Laurent Koscielny will tell you, defense is all about that partnership. One man can’t do it alone. That means that Mats Hummels did not do all that he did on his own either. Which means that the excessive price tag put on Hummels might have been just that – excessive.
If his partner in crime is half the cost, what’s there to lose? He made such a killing next to Hummels. Surely he can do it next to Koscielny too, who is in the same tier as Hummels.

Subotic recently penned a rather sad letter to Dortmund fans telling them that, while he wants to stay, he realizes he isn’t going to play. Therefore an exit is the only way to secure playing time in the prime of his career.
No Premier League team can offer Subotic what Arsenal can. They have a wide open door if he wants in. It won’t be hard to elbow Mertesacker aside and, given Gabriel’s similarities to Koscielny, the Brazilian likely won’t factor in as much more than a rotational option.
I know I keep saying the same thing, but Wenger cannot expect Arsenal’s defense to change if he doesn’t change it himself. Mertesacker is not getting any better. Wenger needs another solid option since he only really has one.
With Subotic being just 27 years of age, he can give Arsenal many useful years at the center of the defense.

Again, there is nothing to lose. So just do it. Arsenal cannot be left to the whims of Gabriel and the BFG. It’s too much like when they were left to the whims of the BFG, Vermaelen and Koscielny, when injuries were on the loose. This is a problem and, like 100% of problems out there, it needs a solution. Subotic is that solution.
