Arsenal are being linked with a £12 million move for Neven Subotic. The addition is a typical Wenger move with a twist, signifying the changing landscape of  the international transfer market.

Arsene Wenger is one of the best managers of all time at finding absolute bargains. He has made a career out of it with Arsenal, forged a reputation of being able to find these hidden gems and develop them into superstars and is a cornerstone of his reluctance in paying the big bucks for the big names.

However, with football more and more popular than it ever has been, these hidden gems are more gems than hidden nowadays. The increasing technology, extensive media coverage and improving knowledge of fans around the world means that players even 10 or 15 years ago were relative unknowns are now household names.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Wenger’s tactic of uncovering the unknown talent, unearthing the rough diamond no longer has the same significance. One player that signifies such a huge shift in how international transfers are now witnessed is Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic.

A player that once would not have been well known in England is already a big name. His performances for Dortmund alongside Mats Hummels have been well documented for some time now, especially under Jurgen Klopp during the German club’s continual success in the Champions League.

Subotic is a typical Wenger signing, it’s just that everyone has already heard of him this time around. Arsenal have been heavily linked with a £12 million move for Subotic, and in the modern day market, that is an absolute bargain.

While in years gone by Wenger has been able to target players like Kolo Toure, Thierry Henry and Patrick Viera on much cheaper deals that the touted £12 million for Subotic, in today’s ever growing, increasingly unpredictable and volatile market, signing a top class center half for less than £15 million is absolutely outstanding business.

The very hint of such a move shows that Wenger still has that all seeing eye for a bargain. He is unwavering in his pursuit for perfection, but he will not be caused to overpay.
