Napoli have slapped a huge £80 million fee on Gonzalo Higauin’s head. If Arsenal weren’t attracted to a potential deal before, then surely they can’t still be considering pursuing the center forward.

It is commonly agreed that Arsenal are in need of a striker. Not only are they short in terms of numbers, but also quality. While Olivier Giroud supporters will shout to the ends of the earth about the virtues of his game, his talents, his attributes and how he brings so much more than simply goals to the team ultimately, will he ever win you a Premier League title?

Even perhaps the biggest of Giroud supporters will have to concede on that point. And that is the crux of the Olivier Giroud issue. Arsenal’s aspirations have to be to win the Premier League. With Giroud in the side, is that possible, never mind likely?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

It is why many have been pining for Wenger to dip his hand into his pocket this Summer. I have been one of them, but it must be for the right player at the right price, not just any old donkey who commands a ridiculous fee off the back of a couple of half decent performances.

It must also not be for a fee that is a near world record for a player that is just not on that elite level. Gonzalo Higuain is one player who has been touted as a possible target for the Gunners. Unfortunately, Napoli value him at £80 million, a fee that is nothing short of utterly ridiculous.

Higuain is certainly a talented player. His goal scoring record speaks for itself, where he banged in a record 36 Serie A goals last year, as well as a consistent scoring rate in previous years with the Italian club and with Real Madrid before them.

However, to spend £80 million on a player that has never played in the Premier League, isn’t even the best striker for his national side and has never been considered one of the upper echelon players in European football is insanity.

While Higuain is a talented player who certainly offers Arsenal a viable option to drastically improve their strike force, he is not worth £80 million, and the Gunners would be ripped off if they even spared a thought to making such an outlandish and naive deal.
