Arsenal’s big Summer signing Granit Xhaka has displayed great confidence in his new teammates. Could it inspire them to success this coming year?

Arsenal are entering a season in which they are in desperate search of success. While two consecutive FA Cups delayed the stay of execution of Arsene Wenger, Arsenal were still unable to bring home any silverware last season (other than the FA Community Shield and I couldn’t care less about winning that).

The demand for success is great, especially in the league, and it has led many to plead for investment this Summer from Wenger. Wenger, however, while he has made bids for various players and has reported interested in a host of top quality players, has not delivered on such promise, signing only two players, one of which is an unknown Japanese youngster.

The other is however a marquee signing in the name of Granit Xhaka. Signed for around £30 million before many had even begun to think about prospective signings, Wenger was surprisingly and uncharacteristically decisive, purposeful and swift in his transfer activity. It was a surprise, but a nice one at that.

One of the key attributes to Xhaka’s game is his leadership skills, something that he demonstrated in spades for Switzerland in the European Championships and that he is displaying for all to see with his latest comments. In broken English, Xhaka talks up the quality of his teammates, showing great confidence in the squad that Wenger has assembled at the Emirates:

More from Pain in the Arsenal

"“They are the best team in the world. I am very happy to be here. For me, it is a dream come true. Arsenal is a club who play football. It is very nice here. Every game they fight. I like that, but Arsenal can also play football and I like that.”"

Such positive comments are wonderful to see from the latest addition. Arsenal are in desperate need for a vocal character, someone to criticize, encourage and improve the teammates around him. Leadership has been a major issue for the squad for many years, and early indications suggest that Xhaka may well be the answer.

This is wonderful to see. A new signing be so vocal of his support his future teammates. It could well be the inspiration that Arsenal need to bring them that ever elusive but ever more necessary success?
