Arsenal: Seaman Comments Prove Stagnant Transfer Window

Arsenal legend David Seaman has urged Arsene Wenger to sign someone to give the club a lift. The very existence of his comments prove that Arsenal have become stagnant this transfer window.

In the fast paced world of modern football, if you’re not moving forwards then you’re moving backwards. Progression is the name of the game and it has been an issue that has plagued Arsenal for over a decade.

Arsene Wenger has been unable to inspire the club to match the success of his early years and mainly through either his unwillingness or inability to spend in the transfer market, has seen the Gunners slip behind rivals like Chelsea and Manchester City who are much more inclined to splash the cash.

In recent seasons, there has been reason for cheer. Wenger shocked the world when he persuaded then Galactico Mesut Ozil to move to North London three years ago. He then backed such an uncharacteristic move up by signing Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona. Both were big money additions and certainly sent out a statement of intent from the aging Wenger.

Since then, however, progress in the transfer market has not followed as expected. Last summer, Arsenal signed Petr Cech in a stunning deal from Chelsea but did not sign one other outfield player. This summer, they purchased Granit Xhaka early and deliberately but have failed to add any others of significance.

Arsenal legend David Seaman has picked up on such regression from Wenger and criticzed his lack of activity in this year’s market, stating that Arsenal need a lift with a major signing :

More from Pain in the Arsenal

“We still need a dominant centre-half. We’ll see what Granit Xhaka’s like in midfield, but ideally we need someone like Patrick Vieira. And a striker as well. He needs to buy someone to give the club a lift and give the fans a lift. Ideally a striker would be great, but either a centre-half or midfielder would do for me.”

The very existence of these comments display an issue for Arsenal. There is an atmosphere of stagnation, a feeling of that’ll do around Arsenal currently. It feels as though Wenger is concerned enough to appear interested in big name players, but not wholeheartedly worried to warrant ever actually parting with the cash that he holds so dear.

Seaman is absolutely spot on. Arsenal need a little re-invigoration before the start of the season, and there is no better way than making a big name signing to galvanize the club. It’s just a shame that that has to be said in the first place.
