Arsenal has been linked with Mahrez and Mustafi, but who else are Arsenal being linked with in the gossip columns and just how realistic are the rumours?

Arsenal failed in their public pursuit of Leicester City superstar Jamie Vardy. They also seemingly failed in their pursuit of N’Golo Kante, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wissam Ben Yedder. However with all that said there is still plenty of time left before the summer transfer window slams shut.

According to the Daily Star on Sunday, Arsenal could bid £50m for Inter Milan striker and captain Mauro Icardi, 23, if a deal for Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette, 25, falls through.

Arsenal reportedly had a £29.3m offer for Lacazette turned down by Lyon last week and could yet go back for the £42m-rated Frenchman. But pugnacious Lyon chairman Jean Michel-Aulas recently came out and said that the Gunners won’t make another bid for the prolific French striker.

The tabloid newspaper also says that Icardi has been linked with a switch to Napoli following Gonzalo Higuain’s controversial and expensive move to Juventus.

Inter yesterday opened the door for a move for Icardi after their president Erick Thohir revealed he is willing to listen to offers for the forward, if they match his £50m asking price.

The Indonesian businessman wants to keep Icardi, who scored 52 goals in all competitions since signing from Sampdoria in 2013.

He said: “All of us at Inter are hoping that figure goes above 60million euros, Inter will be here for hundreds of years but it is made of individuals who change each year.”

In other news, the Sunday Telegraph insist Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is still “in the market for players” after losing defender Per Mertesacker to a long-term injury.

Mertesacker, who is a “heavyweight” in the Arsenal dressing room will miss the rest of the calendar year and Wenger has revealed he will sign an experienced replacement, with targets possibly including Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly. Wenger also stated he was looking for attacking reinforcements as well.

Amidst all the speculation, the controversial manager had time to attack the “completely crazy” prices being spent on players this summer by the all-star cast of managers – Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp – that now surround him.

And finally, according to the Daily Mail Arsenal are lining up a shock £16m bid for West Brom centre-back Jonny Evans as they chase a replacement for the injured Per Mertesacker.

The English tabloid says that Evans was a target for Arsenal while at Manchester United but the Devils did not want to sell to an immediate rival. Evans subsequently joined Tony Pulis at West Bromwich Albion and according to the Mail is now valued at treble that (£6m) by the Welshman.
