Arsene Wenger has had his say on Arsenal’s rivals’, Manchester United, impending move for Paul Pogba, stating that the potential world record move is crazy.

Modern prices for footballers are becoming increasingly steep. That is a fact that none can dispute. The morality of such price rises, however, is a question that will rage on as long as such astronomical fees are paid.

It is a murky answer. On the one hand, football is, as the old adage goes, a results based business, and while there may be anomalies to the general trend, ultimately, history, especially recent history, has taught us that success can be bought, however unromantic the thought.

On the other, the so called beautiful game is becoming mired by money, a game about has the biggest pockets, not who produces the best team. That is a shame, and Arsene Wenger is clearly a man who shares such regret at the changing nature of modern football.

When asked about Manchester United’s eyewatering prospective deal for Paul Pogba, Wenger spoke of the sensational prize that could well be paid for his services:

More from Pain in the Arsenal

"“It is completely crazy if you cannot afford to pay it. If you can afford to pay it you can justify it. Wenger said on Arsenal’s tour of the United States. It is completely crazy if you compare it to normal life. That is for sure. But we live in a world where every activity that is worldwide makes a lot of money. Football has become a worldwide competition and that is why clubs can afford to do it. Does it make sense in the way the player can give you that investment back? Nobody ever could calculate.”"

While success is the name of the game, the transfer-centric world that football is quickly becoming is a shame. No longer is the development of young talents, the nuances of tactics and strategies, being able to coach up players that are already in the squad the central importance of managers.

It is a job that is about accumulating the best possible players to make up the best possible squad, and that is a sad sad state of affairs. While it is likely that Pogba will bring great success to Manchester United, it is disappointing that such success is found through the way of the wallet. Unfortunately, that is the case and Wenger will have to learn to adapt, if he himself is win once again with Arsenal.
