Arsenal have reportedly accepted a loan offer from Galatasaray for Mathieu Debuchy. If the deal can be completed, then a real window of opportunity has been opened for the forgotten Carl Jenkinson.

Competition for places and having too many players simply sitting in the reserves is a line that is difficult to tread. Arsene Wenger has quietly and efficiently built a squad that is deep and big, laced with plenty of quality throughout, even if it is lacking at the very peak in a few key areas.

One area of great strength is in central midfield. With the return of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla from injury, and Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin already in the team, Arsenal have a host of options available to them. Add £35 million Granit Xhaka this summer, and all of a sudden, Wenger has a lot of selection headaches.

Another position where numbers are great is at right back. While the sensational Hector Bellerin is the definite starter barring a massive drop in form or injury, Arsenal welcomed back both Mathieu Debuchy and Carl Jenkinson from loan deal with Bordeaux and West Ham respectively.

The selection crisis came in carrying three right backs. One was always going to miss out this coming year, and Wenger had a decision to make about who, between Debuchy and Jenkinson, he was going to keep as Bellerin’s back up and who would let leave.

Well, now Wenger has made up his mind,  having reportedly accepted a loan offer for Debuchy from Galatasaray, and such a decision has given Jenkinson a great window of opportunity. Now 24, Jenkinson has performed excellently in consecutive season-long loan deals with the Hammers and now returns to the Emirates buoyed by his recent form.

While playing time may be an issue due to Bellerin’s consistency, he will get chances in cup competitions to prove his quality and if injury does strike, has an opportunity to show all the potential that Wenger believed he possessed when he first signed as a teenager from Charlton.

Sending Debuchy out on loan clearly shows that he is no longer needed within the Arsenal setup. That is due to the progression of both Hector Bellerin and Carl Jenkinson, with the latter now set to have a golden opportunity to prove his quality this coming season.
