Arsenal: Julian Draxler’s Motives Must Be Questioned
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal are yet again linked to Julian Draxler, but seeing as how he just moved to Wolfsburg and he is suddenly wanting away, we must question his motives.
There are some guys that are just perpetually on Arsenal’s radar, forever linked to the Emirates. Julian Draxler is one of those guys. The young German is in the fast lane to super stardom as, at the age of 22, he is already a regular for the German national team as well as one of the better midfielders in the whole of Europe.

However, it can never be that easy. Arsenal were strongly linked to Draxler last summer with the entire world fully aware that he was on his way out of FC Schalke, where he had grown into the spotlight.
Instead of making a big time move to a major European club, though, Draxler chose to land at Wolfsburg, who were fresh off of losing their talisman, Kevin De Bruyne.
Let’s just say it didn’t work out so well. Draxler over-committed himself to Wolfsburg, signed a five year deal and only has a release clause in the summer of 2017. So he essentially tied himself down for at least two years.
Not the best time for Wolfsburg to tank into eighth place and miss out on European football.
Still, Julian Draxler’s reaction has been less than appealing. At the first sign of trouble, he has told Wolfsburg that he wants out. He wants nothing to do with his five year deal and he is reportedly pushing for a move to Arsenal.
I have said enough about why Arsenal should not be pursuing him based on his position and skill set alone, but the way he is handling this entire situation makes me want him even less. Draxler has to realize that he put himself on this team by forcing a move from Schalke. The fact that his new club then subsequently fell further down the table then Schalke and lost Andre Schurrle in the process does not have any sort of standing on his contract.

It’s a bad situation, but you’re prone to run into those from time to time in life. It’s the handling of those situations that shows what you’re all about, and I think that Draxler’s motives need to be questioned before Arsenal come gunning for the highly overpriced man.
Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs was very clear about how he felt about Draxlers wanderlust. “Julian chose the wrong path,” he told Bild. He went on to say that under no circumstances would he be sold and it’s hard to argue with the man. He invested a lot of money in Draxler to fill the gap De Bruyne left so for him to flip around and sell the replacement just a year later would rob Wolfsburg of yet another talented midfielder.

Arsenal are always emphasizing character and it was for that reason that I was not all that enthused about the links to Mario Gotze. I hate to put Julian Draxler in the same category, but given his antics, it’s hard not to compare the two.
