Arsene Wenger has admitted that Aaron Ramsey’s best position is in central midfield. Such an admission could well see the return of the Arsenal’s star form from 2013.

Arsene Wenger has often been in favor of having versatile players to make up a flexible squad. He enjoys having players who can play in multiple positions well and coaches players to develop attributes that allow them to excel in a variety of role.

It is the mental side of the game, a player’s reading and understanding that is so important to their versatility. However, while of these attributes are things to be praised and sought after, sometimes they come at the expense of expertise in one area.

One such example of that type of player is Aaron Rasmey. His technical prowess and mental sharpness means that he has the ability to play across the whole of the five-man midfield. This, though, does inhibit his opportunity to play in his preferred, and best, position, central midfield.

Thankfully, in light of having a central midfield selection headache on his hands, Arsene Wenger has since stated that Ramsey’s best role in this Arsenal side is as a box-to-box midfielder:

More from Pain in the Arsenal

"“If you consider his physiological profile, he can absorb all the positions. He is certainly most suited to central midfield because he’s a box-to-box player. I think he likes to come from deep and make runs going forward, so I would think that at the start he would like to play from a deeper position in midfield. That’s more suited to him and therefore that gives him a tactical responsibility for us that he may not have for Wales.”"

Wenger is undoubtedly right. Ramsey is a sensational player when fit and on form, but he has not been unable to match his wonderful 2013 form since being squeezed into the line-up on the right wing. Wenger, though, clearly seems intent on moving the Welsh international back inside and it could well reap significant rewards.

Getting Aaron Ramsey back on form will be crucial to Arsenal’s success this coming season, and with Wenger’s apparent intention to find a place for him in the crowded central positions, he could be set to re-find that terrific form of a few years previous.
