Arsenal: Everyone Needs To Calm Down About Mahrez
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s summer transfer window has not gone the way fans would have liked, but that isn’t an excuse for everyone to lose their minds over Riyad Mahrez.
The Premier League is off to a rip-roaring start, with only one team (as of writing) scoring over a goal. Naturally, that team was everyone’s pick to win the Premier League, Hull City (assuming you turned your table upside down). The Tigers knocked the defending champions down a peg for the first time in quite awhile. Naturally, the only question on Arsenal supporters’ minds is…

….”so what does that mean about Riyad Mahrez?”
This has been one of the most befuddling transfer rumors in some time just because it is simply not something the Gunners need. Compared to the handful of things they do need. Yet somehow everyone is in support of it.
There are so many more pressing concerns right now, such as the threadbare defense, yet we are all clamoring for the big flashy signing that can ‘win Arsenal the Premier League’.
It’s the ‘just sign someone’ syndrome, but it needs to be reigned in, no? Riyad Mahrez had a fantastic year last year, but his stats betray one big thing – towards the end of the year he tailed off. He pulled an Alexis Sanchez where he dominated the first half, then defenses started to figure him out and suddenly, he didn’t look so effective.
I’m not saying that Mahrez is garbage, but to want to go break the bank on a guy with a little over half a season of prolonged relevance has me asking questions.
Supporters are harsh on Wenger, rightfully so at times, but to gripe about him not splurging on a luxury that Arsenal in no way needs discredits the gripes they do have, such as why we will be starting Theo Walcott against Liverpool.
That is a gripe. Not signing Riyad Mahrez isn’t.

Plus, I’m not convinced the papers aren’t all just taking us for a ride with this rumor. By my calculations, Mahrez has agreed to personal terms with Arsenal three separate times this summer. How many times can you agree to something before it becomes a reality?
The conflicting reports are out of control. One day Mahrez dedicates himself to staying at Leicester, the next he has agreed to a brand new set of personal terms.
It’s enough to drive you crazy if you buy into everything they tell you.
Turn off this transfer rumor, please. There is no need for Arsenal to sign Mahrez, no signs that they are signing Mahrez and nothing, barring an extreme injury crisis, will change that.
Then again, that’s just my opinion. I care not for the prospect of bringing in Mahrez, but there are those of you out there that do and I respect that. That doesn’t mean I necessarily understand it.

I also understand that you could pin this desperation on Wenger not making signings, but making a left field, luxury signing like this won’t solve anything.
