Arsenal: Mathieu Or Mustafi? It’s A No Brainer
Arsenal are close to a deal for Shkodran Mustafi but reports are stating that they may turn to Jeremy Mathieu instead. It’s a no brainer as to who’s better.
The need for a centre-back cannot be understated. Arsenal were in need of a commanding, authoritative centre-back before the summer transfer window started. After recent injury news, the need has only accentuated and bringing in a new central defender is absolutely vital.

With both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista out of contention for two months at least – with Per it could be closer to four – Arsenal’s options in the centre of defense are wafer thin and reinforcements are desperately needed.

Thankfully, it seems as though Wenger agrees with such a stance, making a concerted effort to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi. However, as the deal stalls with the clubs unable to reach an agreement on a fee, reports have stated that Wenger may now turn his attention to Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu.
What on earth?!
How can Wenger think that a Barcelona cast off – and may I add a cast off of a defence that has always been the weak point of the side – is a sufficient solution to Arsenal’s needs and a sufficient replacement for a German international who’s only 24, can speak English and already has Premier League experience.
Comparing these two players is an absolute no brainer. Mustafi is far the better player. He is stronger in the air, more physical, very rarely gets caught out of position and isn’t an adapted left back, all issues that can be assigned to Mathieu.
Moreover, and this is perhaps the biggest reason to steer clear of Mathieu, the Barcelona defender is now 32. The deal stinks of the Sylvestre deal all those years ago when Arsenal were desperately short in defence. Mathieu is not a ready-made centre-half due to his lack of experience outside of a Spain, a country that plays football in a completely different manner to England, and neither is he a long term option.

Mustafi is the perfect signing in Arsenal’s current predicament. Mathieu, meanwhile, is far from it, and if Wenger chooses to spurn the opportunity to sign the better of the two because of £5 million, then there will be a host of Arsenal fans calling for his head.
