Arsenal have been hesitant to spend in the transfer window under Arsene Wenger. Now, Le Prof has stated that he is ready to do so but his words seem hollow.

Whether Arsenal will ever actually utilise their warchest is a topic hot on the lips of many supporters. It is a yearly ritual in which the club will be linked with a host of options, all of which are wholly unrealistic, optimistic fans will fall hook, line and sinker for them, and Arsene Wenger will resist spending, sticking with his frugal philosophies.

Such is the repitition, that questions are now being asked of Wenger’s intentions. He is regularly having to refute doubts over his ambition and desire, continually stating that not only is the money available to spend, but he is willing to spend it. Amid another furstratingly quiet summer, Wenger has had to once again publicly declare his readiness to spend:

More from Pain in the Arsenal

"“We are ready to spend the money we have. It’s not my money. It’s important to spend money the right way. It was important before the game. You do not sign players because you think it’s very important or not. I think it’s very difficult to find players and identify them. That’s why everyone is on the market for the same players and the deals. There are two markets – one for English clubs and one for others. English clubs can suffocate themselves. They have to pay massive wages, even when the players go out (on loan) they have to pay half their wages.”"

While it is often reassuring to hear him state of his desire to invest heavily on the right player, it is simply becoming unbelievable, literally. His words now have a complete and utter lack of meaning and gumption. They are hollow.

What brings so many fans to doubt Wenger is his lack of action. They say that “actions speak louder than words”. Well, in this case they really do, and the Arsenal manager is not supporting what he says with what he does.

With now under two weeks remaining of the transfer window, only time will tell if this is the year to break the seemingly unending cycle of hope and then despair, optimism and then disappointment.

I am, though, not falling for Wenger’s talk yet again. This time, I will believe it when I see it, because I have seen it fall flat so many times before.
