7. Mesut Ozil

Fact: I feel dirty putting Mesut Ozil this far down on the list solely based on the premise that he doesn’t have the numbers to back up a higher rating.

Fact: Let me reassert that I do not expect Ozil to stay this low in the top ten. I would guess that by the next time we roll out the ranks, the German maestro will be pushing up near the top five.

Mesut Ozil has two goals and zero assists on the year. Don’t let that throw you into thinking that he has been bad or underwhelming. He hasn’t been. Ozil is a puppet master. He works behind the scenes. Just because the numbers aren’t coming off yet doesn’t mean that A. they never will and B. he hasn’t been contributing.

Ozil is still a crucial piece of this offense, it’s just that in the current flow of the game, his team mates don’t need his intricate passes to find space and subsequently find the back of the net.

This is all working in his favor. Let defenses saunter away from Ozil and focus on the Alexis’s and Walcott’s of the attack. Because as soon as that happens, Ozil hits you with a beauty.
