Hector Bellerin is close to agreeing a new deal with Arsenal per his agent. Such news is highly important due to the statement of intent that it makes.

For a period of time, Arsenal had relegated themselves to a selling club. The move to the Emirates severely limited the financial abilities of the club, rivals were backed by big spending owners, more than happy to splash the cash and senior players were becoming exasperated with the lack of success the side enjoyed.

A great many number of key members of the first team were sold during the four or five year stretch of sheer depression and repeated disappointment. The likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie all left during that time and the squad suffered as a result.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Over the past three years, the selling patterns of the past have died, and Arsenal have been able to recruit some top quality players and develop from within without the fear of losing them at a later date to the true big boys of the Premier League. One such player is Hector Bellerin, who’s agent has stated that he and the club are close to agreeing a new deal, saying:

"“We are speaking and are now a lot closer than we were two weeks ago. In a normal situation he will sign. Héctor is very happy at Arsenal. This would be the fourth time he has signed a new contract at the club and it is clear he has made good progress.”"

The seemingly impending completion of a new deal is significant for one key reason. This is a statement of intent from the club and Arsene Wenger in particular. For many years, Wenger was powerless to preventing his players from leaving the club thanks to the financial restrictions that he had to work within and the desire of his players to leave a stagnating Emirates.

Now, though, Wenger no longer has to work under such conditions. He can be forthright and deliberate in contract negotiations, aggressive in the transfer window and enjoy the freedom that a rather increased wallet brings.

Signing Bellerin to a long-term deal, while important because it ties down the future of the Spaniard to the club, is immeasurably more important because of the public statement of intent that it signals from Wenger and the club. Arsenal are now able to compete financially and as a result, are able to enjoy the futures and the primes of their very best players.
