Arsenal’s striker corps could use an upgrade, but Arsene Wenger’s holy grail, Antoine Griezmann, may be setting himself up to be a villain, not a hero.

I have little doubts that if there were a cheat sheet of all of Arsene Wenger’s transfer targets to bring to Arsenal, Antoine Griezmann would be right there at the top. The two interact like old buddies and there have been flirtations in the past of him coming to North London.

However, the Frenchman has made it clear that he has no reason to leave Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid. And it’s hard to blame him. His club is busting up the power couple in La Liga and they are always in the running for the Champions League final.

Still, Griezmann has never ruled out moving to another club at some juncture and given how the Premier League is the end goal for just about everyone, he has made no qualms about how he wouldn’t mind playing in England one day.

Giving fuel to the whole ‘eventually he’ll come to Arsenal’ thought process – a thought process I subscribed to.

As such, I have fallen on a bit of a disappointing news blip concerning the coveted striker. In an interview with Sky Sports, Griezmann was put to the question again and his answers will give you a bit of the heebie-jeebies.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

“I always ask Paul Pogba about Manchester United,” he said. “I think they are a huge club with a really good infrastructure. I ask Paul about some of the players, and if they’re really that good, or if Jose Mourinho is really that good.

“You hear a lot of things [speculation] about Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain but right now I don’t see me moving to a new club. But it would be awesome to play alongside Paul one day.”

Charming. Probably the last thing we could have ever wanted to hear, we have just heard. Griezmann has a fancy for Pogba (how?) and a fancy for Mourinho’s new toy as well (again, how?).

Granted, it’s all chit-chat and nothing serious, it’s still a bit disheartening is all. Arsenal still has Wenger and they could have Simeone in the future, which would heavily turn the tide in the Gunner’s favor.

Seeing Griezmann go to United would be like seeing Lex Luther giving Superman a piggy back ride. It’s a hero vs villain story that is not supposed to go along the lines of the Gunners being the heroes and Griezmann being the villain.
