Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin will miss some important games through injury this month. Should Arsenal pursue quality backup options in his position?

Arsenal were hit with the injury bug over the recent international break, with Alexis Sanchez and Hector Bellerin both reporting injuries from international play.

Bellerin, traveling with the Spain under-21 side after failing to earn a call-up to Julian Lopetegui’s Spain side, reportedly sustained two different injuries during the break.

The articles surrounding his pulling out of the squad said that his ankle ligaments wer the problem, but a recent Snapchat of Bellerin’s revealed a mark on his ear.

The ear injury sounds like something that will go away in a matter of days, but an ankle sprain regularly keeps players out of action for weeks – which, reportedly, Bellerin is.

Bellerin will miss both the match against Manchester United and the match against PSG, two huge games for the Gunners.

Both of those games happen the week after the international break, which means that between now and then a new right-back will have to be drafted into the side.

Here is the problem.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The Gunners don’t have a wealth of options at right back that would impress Arsene Wenger.

After Calum Chambers was loaned to Middlesbrough, we were still left with Mathieu Debuchy and Carl Jenkinson.

Neither of the latter two played a part in the Gunner’s 2015-16 campaign, with Jenkinson away at West Ham and Debuchy failing to overtake Bellerin as the first choice. Debuchy hasn’t looked like he did at Newcastle since he left Tyneside, and Gooners cannot be confident with him going up against Anthony Martial and Angel Di Maria.

Jenkinson could prove a lot of people wrong and perform in Bellerin‘s place, but nobody really knows about him. He has not featured as of yet.

Jordan Osei-Tutu and Chiori Johnson are young right backs at Arsenal (both in the U21/U18). They are unable to be called on right now, but in the future they will hopefully develop.

However, at the moment the situation is dire. Bellerin will need to return soon, because he is integral to Arsenal’s attacking game. Possibly, in January, a potential alternate could be sought out.
