Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs has admitted that Julian Draxler could leave the club. However, the Arsenal ship has now well and truly sailed.

The summer transfer window is well and truly in the distance and the January one is not a particular priority as of now given the frequency of important games in the lead-up to the Christmas period. However, for Arsenal and their possible ventures, the news is a year-round event.

In the summer, much of the talk regarding Arsene Wenger and his possible investments centred on a centre-half and an attack minded player. With the Granit Xhaka signing wrapped up early in the summer, many were satisfied with the options in central midfield. It was at the two extremities where concerns lay.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

In particular, many were hoping for investment in a striker and wide player. With Olivier Giroud proving that he is not a title-winning calibre forward – he is still a very good player, but he does not have the goalscoring consistency to fire a team to a Premier League title – and doubts regarding the wide right position, many names were bandied around regarding possible signings.

One such name was Wolfsburg winger Julian Draxler. Very rarely has there been a transfer window in which Arsenal have not been linked to a possible move to Draxler. The German winger is certainly the type of player that Wenger likes to recruit. Attacking, intelligent and technically proficient. However, there has never been any real concrete suggestions that a move was a possibility.

Recently, though, Wolfsburg director Klaus Allofs has stated that Draxler could leave the club in the near future after expressing sadness at being forced to stay with the German club in the summer amid speculation about a move away to a whole host of top European clubs, including the Gunners. However, if Draxler is still seeking a move to North London, that ship has now well and truly sailed.

With the emergence of Alex Iwobi, the positional switch of Theo Walcott and the continued development of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, alongside the positional versatility of Aaron Ramsey, Danny Welbeck and new signing Lucas Perez, Wenger now has a host of options in wide and attacking areas.

While Draxler is a very talented player, the significant fee that it would take to bring him to the Emirates cannot be justified by the need. Simply, Arsenal no longer need Draxler.
