Jamie Redknapp has stated that Arsenal can still mount a serious title challenge, but any chances of lifting the Premier League seem like a pipe dream.

History has a painful – though sometimes joyous, it often depends on what side of the fence you find yourself sitting on – habit of repeating itself. For Arsenal and Arsene Wenger, especially if recent history is to be believed, it is certainly a painful truth.

How many times have we had to watch on as, after a wonderfully promising first half to the season in which Wenger’s side play some beautifully free-flowing, attacking football, only to see all our hopes and aspirations crash and burn with the onslaught of injuries and subsequent poor form?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

It is metronomic, unavoidable. Inevitable you may say.  It is now a mental issue that is deeply entrenched within the squad and after some poor performances and consequent results in recent weeks, such doubts and worries are once again rearing their ugly head. Though not if you ask Jamie Redknapp. The Sky Sports’ pundit is surprisingly positive regarding the Gunners’ title credentials, stating:

"“They look stronger. They have real game-changers in Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, and Olivier Giroud is looking like a good option off the bench. The defence looks better than it’s ever looked, too. It was difficult to see them winning the league with Per Mertesacker in the team, but Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi look like the real deal. Arsenal have drawn their last two Premier League games after playing in the Champions League, which makes it all the more important to take the three points against Bournemouth on Sunday.”"

However, while I have been positive about the early season form of this side, the greater steeliness that has seen them rescue desperately underserved points with late goals on numerous occasions and the prospects of this team moving forward, if you were to ask me whether I really believe that Arsenal will lift the Premier League trophy, I would have to say no.

The historical tendencies of this side, their mental fragilities, their penchant for flattering to deceive all combine to my thinking that I cannot ascribe to the thought that Arsenal will win the league.

Can they win the league? Absolutely. They have the skill, the experience and now the character to do so. Will they? That is a very different question and I would be very tentative to say they will.
