Julian Draxler’s asking price has reportedly been slashed to £25 million. If true, he would be a dream for Arsenal. Sadly, it won’t ever become a reality.

In the past, Arsenal have had their transfer brakes slammed on thanks to the strict and stubborn evaluation that Arsene Wenger portrays onto his players. Wenger is infuriatingly economically focused. He will not overpay for a player if he believes that said player is not worth the asking price being demanded by the club.

When the Gunners were struggling at the goalkeeping position, a report came out that Wenger saw then Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer as a potential solution. After making an initial offer of £4 million, Fulham responded asking for £5 million. Wenger refused based on his principles that Schwarzer was not worth the extra £1 million.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

That, perhaps more than any other stat or story, demonstrates that way in which Wenger operates in the transfer market. It’s not that he is unwilling or unable to spend big, it’s simply that he is will only do so on the right player, and finding that player is a much tougher task than many may admit.

As the January transfer window looms, rumours now state that long-time interest – or apparent interest, it is very difficult to know when discussing Wenger and his desires – Julian Draxler has had his price slashed by current club Wolfsburg. The German winger was publicly unhappy with having to stay with the club after a summer of turbulence and has not performed to his expected level so far this year.

As such, the German club have seen the interest from numerous clubs around Europe, including the Gunners, and are looking to cash in, even at a significantly reduced price. The rumours circling suggest that Draxler could be available for as little as £25 million, a huge drop from the £50 million plus that was reportedly demanded in the summer.

As such, the same clubs that were mentioned in the summer, the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Arsenal are once again being linked with another move and it would be a sensational signing if Wenger could secure it.

If Wenger was worried by the significant fee that Wolfsburg were demanding in the summer, then such worries could now be settled. However, while it would be wonderful to see Draxler surveying the left flank at the Emirates, it is a dream that just will not become a reality. If it would, Wenger would have made it happen long before now.
