8. Alex Iowbi CAN BE Special

I don’t dig all caps, so you know I want to emphasize the whole “CAN BE” part of this learned point.

Alex Iwobi somehow, someway, bypassed Joel Campbell, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (in no particular order) to take the starting winger role opposite Alexis Sanchez. That is equal parts miraculous and impressive.

Coming into the new season, he was not gifted the starting job but he was given his chance, looked great, looked shaky, looked poor, looked good again.

It’s up and down and up and down with this kid. It’s still confusing where he fits in with the attacking scheme and why his confidence is so spotty. It is a massive work in progress and one that can breed fantastic results or fall flat on its face.

The main thing to remember here is that he is immensely talented. But so is the Ox and he has gone five years with just being promising. Iwobi can follow in those footsteps or he can branch out and actually capitalize on his potential. It’s a big task and one that falls on Wenger, but it can be done.
