Cesc Fabregas has stated that Arsenal hold a special place in his heart. Arsene Wenger should look to pull on the midfielder’s heart strings in the summer.

It’s time to talk about Cesc Fabregas. The former Arsenal starlet has been unused and unwanted in Antonio Conte’s defence-first system at Chelsea, and although he has had success when he has played – amassing six Premier League assists already – he is clearly not a key cog in the league leaders’ machine.

As such, rumours have begun to surface musing at the possibility of a return to North London and the Emirates, a place in which his name was made with a series of glittering seasons as he developed under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

In fact, such was the talent of Fabregas and the success that he had in his first stint with the Gunners, that Thierry Henry believed that Wenger, a man who stubbornly vouched for a blend of pace and power in a 4-4-2 system, altered his footballing philosophies to accommodate the less athletic but mentally and technically gifted Spaniard. In a recent corporate event with sponsor Puma, Fabregas revealed his adoration of Wenger and his time under the veteran coach. When asked about whether the North London side holds a special place in his heart, Fabregas stated:

"“Yes, forever. There are some things that will never change. Arsenal will always be the team that believed in me the most. I was a young kid, playing for the Barcelona academy – where it is difficult to reach the first team – and Arsene Wenger especially gave me everything. Without them, I would not be a European Championship winner, a World Cup winner and I would not have experienced all of this that I am enjoying in my life so I will be forever grateful.”"

Now 29, and entering the latter half of the prime of his career, Fabregas will be desperate to play regularly at the highest level he is able to do so. As proven in glimpses this season, he is still capable of an exceptional standard of play, one that could well inspire a team to a league title. Should Arsenal be the ones to pursue the potentially disillusioned midfielder?

Certainly, there are few arguments against. It would not take much to convince him to move – although the fee may be a little offputting for the notoriously frugal Wenger – and his quality would immediately improve a squad that, with Santi Cazorla only aging each year and struggling with injuries during the last two campaigns, would be improved with another deep-lying, creative midfielder.

In reality, the chances of a sensational return are extremely small. But, in the world of football, where dreamy scenarios are often just around the corner, Fabregas coming back home may not be as surreal as first thought.
