Honorable Mention: Joe Baker

Andy had Joe Baker ranking in at 10th on his list, which puts him higher on the honorable mentions charts than my man, Olivier Giroud. The Liverpool native was at Arsenal from 1962-1966. But while he didn’t spend as much time at Arsenal as some of the greats on this list, he made the most of the time he had.

In those four years, three of them had Baker as the club’s top scorer. Overall, he finished right at the century mark, scoring 100 goals in 156 career appearances for Arsenal, which at the time made him one of the Gunners all time greatest goal scorers.

Baker was a speed merchant, who used his pace and technical ability to dissect opposing defenses. He was even a natural header of the ball, combining masterfully with Geoff Strong to form a memorable striking partnership.

The hang up with Joe Baker is that in his time, the Gunners never finished above 7th place. It was the defense that was largely at fault for this, but the lack of bona fide results hold back Baker’s standing.

He was sold to Nottingham Forest in 1966 and was never able to return to the same form he was in while with the Gunners.

Honorable mentions are over, let’s get into those rankings!
