Massimiliano Allegri has neither confirmed or denied rumours linking him with Arsenal. The club have a forward-thinking attitude regarding Arsene Wenger’s impending exit.

Arsenal can learn a lot from the recent struggles of their greatest rivals. Throughout Arsene Wenger’s early years in North London, it was Manchester United, under the equally domineering and grandiose tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson that posed the greatest threat to their ascendency.

The Scot was a master tactician, he assembled a great number of dominating teams and enjoyed seemingly relentless success throughout his many years with the club. However, in 2013, Ferguson revealed that he would retire, meaning United were forced into a crucial recruitment process that they couldn’t afford to get wrong.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

They did. Three times, in fact. Their first mistake was to hire David Moyes. Their second mistake was to not give the Scot the money to invest that he required and the time to shape his own team. Their third mistake was hiring Louis Van Gaal. Since Ferguson retired, they have qualified for the Champions League just once and won just one major trophy; the FA Cup last season.

In a very similar scenario, Wenger will soon leave Arsenal; whether through resignation, retirement or reprimand. It is comforting to see, then, that the club are sounding out possible replacements for the man that has minutely-managed every aspect of the club for over 20 years.

One name who has surfaced is Massimiliano Allegri. The now Juventus manager is on his way to yet another Serie A title with the Old Lady this season and has established himself as a top-class manager, both adept in the transfer market and an astute tactician. Just this week, though, when asked about links to the role at the Emirates, Allegri could neither confirm nor deny the reports:

"“I won’t deny or confirm anything. I am in sync with the club, now we have to focus on winning. At this time of the season the media always says I’m leaving, even when things are going really well.”"

Although Allegri does not state that there he has been contacted, it is fairly clear that Arsenal are sounding out possibilities if Wenger does indeed leave. It is this forward-thinking attitude that, unlike Manchester United before them, stands them in good stead when their stalwart manager departs.
