Arsene Wenger has stated that Arsenal fans should be more like Spurs fans and support the team through rough times. That is an insulting remark.

The Premier League title is over once again, the Champions League is lilely beyond this current squad, especially given Bayern Munich were, predictably, the team to pop up in the round of last 16, and now Arsenal have only the FA Cup to hope for as an attainable trohpy.

Add to this that their top four place is far from confirmed, with Liverpool, Spurs, Manchester United and Manchester City all challenging Arsene Wenger’s side for the final three positions behind Chelsea, and it is easy to see why so many fans are disgruntled and angry.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

As such, there has been a rather heated debated centred on the right of fans to protest against the team, and in particularly the manager. In his pre-match press conference on Thursday morning, Wenger himself had his say on the negative atmosphere that is rifethroughout the fanbase:

"“Our fans have been consistent and have a high level of expectation as I do but I don’t feel you can be a fan until last Tuesday and then not be behind the team anymore – it doesn’t make sense. We are in a fight and we have to be united or we have no chance. You have Tottenham and everyone is behind their team and we have to do the same. Even if we have had two disappointed results I want the fans to be behind the team. Focus on what we do well.”"

Now, I should state that I am not a member of the ‘Wenger Out’ brigade. I still feel that Arsenal are best served by persisting with the Frenchman and I can see progress has been made as Wenger has become more agressive and willing in the transfer window in recent summers. However, that does not mean that Wenger should asks his club’s fans to be more supportive of the club.

We, as a fanbase, pay the most expensive ticket prices in the country, pour our hearts and souls into the club, through participation, buying merchandise and even blogging, and have a right to state our opinion, however negative it may be.

That does not mean that all of us must agree. It does not mean that anyone who wants Wenger to leave is no longer a fan of the club. It simply means that we have a right to our opinion, and given, recent results, it’s no surprise that it’s not all that positive for Wenger and his players. It is insulting to suggest that it should be any other way.
