Arsenal were linked heavily to Anthony Martial before Manchester United broke the bank for him. Kylian Mbappe can makeup for that instance.

Monaco is just a factory of Arsenal bait. Most of their talents, seemingly all of them, at one point or another get linked to the Gunners before they move on to somewhere else. Yet, while Thierry Henry set the standard pretty high, he has been the last of the supply line.

Anthony Martial would have been a great re-entry into business with Monaco. However, when it comes to spending money, Manchester United will always have you beat, and they forked out a ton for the young Frenchman.

You’d have to say it is working out for them. While finding consistent playing time is hard in Jose Mourinho’s revolving system, when Martial has had the chance to play, he has done well. And, at just 21 years of age, the ceiling is so incredibly high.

Which raises the question: How much is too much to pay for a talent that could be (key words there) the next great thing?

Well, Monaco take this question every seriously, as they are supposedly looking for a whopping £51m for youngster Kylian Mbappe. Which, all things considered, can’t be considered all that out of the ordinary and is, in a word (or two), worth it.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Let’s consult the numbers.

In Martial’s last season with Monaco before being sold for a massive (ever-increasing) price, he scored nine goals and nabbed three assists in 1800 minutes. That’s impressive. A goal or assist every 150 minutes. For a teenager, that makes everyone happy.

But what Kylian Mbappe is doing is even better. In 734 minutes this season, he has scored seven goals and five assists, raising the tally to a goal or assist every hour. Yes, that’s right. Every hour.

And that doesn’t even include his four goals in four appearances in the domestic cups and the goal in the Champions League.

Oh, and he is 18.

So yeah, pay them the money and solve your striker problems for good. Donyell Malen is a rising star and Stephy Mavididi is one step closer to making the first team. But when an exceptional talent makes himself so obviously known and available, you take it. Especially if he can make an impact right now.

The numbers are indisputable and he has the word of Thierry Henry to back him up. Mbappe is going to be a star one way or another. It would be foolish of Arsenal to let him be a star somewhere else. Especially after seeing Martial make the transition to the Premier League so smooth.
