Arsenal are facing a very unrealistic possibility where Sergio Aguero replaces Alexis Sanchez, but this swap crucially misses the point and needs more addressing.

There is a very interesting possibility developing that involves Arsenal swapping Sergio Aguero for Alexis Sanchez and calling it a day. The Manchester City striker has fallen behind in the pecking order to Gabriel Jesus and could very well return to that come next season.

After all, Pep Guardiola can be a strange manager with sporadic fancies that can exclude even someone with the undeniable talent of Sergio Aguero, who could start just about anywhere he wants to.

The bench is not a place for Aguero. It never has been and until another half decade passes, he isn’t even going to be thinking about not starting. At any point. Ever.

So having to sit and watch someone a decade younger than him and hope that he can win his place back is not going to be appealing.

As such, a transfer seems totally realistic. And, seeing as how Pep Guardiola has so much confidence in himself and his own team building abilities, he shouldn’t be as staunchly opposed to seeing Aguero go to a rival as someone else might be.

And obviously that would help us cope with the potential loss of Alexis pretty well. But the point I keep making applies here as well – there is no player that can, one-for-one, replace what Alexis brings to this side.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Not only that, but thinking that Aguero can replace Alexis is assuming that Alexis is nothing more than a striker. That isn’t so. His usefulness expands into the wing position, where he is probably even stronger and more useful than up front.

That isn’t Aguero. Wenger will not be able to do to Aguero what he did to Lucas. You can’t just turn him into a winger.

What we would have if we swapped Alexis for Aguero is the same problem we have right now – too much talent at the striker position and not enough positions to utilize. Meanwhile, without Alexis, our wide ability would be atrocious.

Having Aguero and Alexis, however, would be quite the tandem. Especially if Lucas does push for an exit. It would still leave the attack a bit lopsided though and not address the attacking issues we are accumulating. Namely, the occasional voids at the No. 10 spot and wide right.

Switching to a 4-4-2 would solve so many problems, but Wenger, for whatever reason, isn’t too keen. So for now, let’s just hope to God that Alexis stays.
