Arsenal’s loss at Liverpool was not surprising. Seeing Alexis start the game on the bench, however, was surprising. Why would he stay?

Everyone who loves and adores and follows Arsenal wants Alexis Sanchez to stay. We all wake up everyday hoping it’ll be the day that the Chilean locks in a new contract and commits himself to the club.

And then you see that he is benched against Liverpool. Again, given no other explanation, it feels like his fate is sealed, he is off to another club that will give him what he wants, because Arsenal is too stubborn to do so.

However, let’s assume that no deal is in place yet. Let’s assume that Alexis was just as surprised as us to be left off of the team sheet, especially considering how he hasn’t left for another team yet. If that is the case, then didn’t Wenger just essentially push Alexis out the door? How can you possibly justify sitting him?

Does Chelsea sit Eden Hazard for tactical reasons? Does United sit Zlatan? This stuff doesn’t happen. We all wanted changes, but we didn’t mean for the one guy that we are all united behind to be dropped for absolutely no reason.

Which brings about my big question: Do you really want to play for a manager that drops you in a huge game, then sends you on at half and watches as his tactical decision making is blown to bits? If I’m Alexis Sanchez, this is a huge slight on my merit as a player, a slight that he in no way, shape or form deserved.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

It’s not just dropping him that was the embarrassing part. It was putting him on at half and seeing the difference. All of a sudden, rather than looking like a midtable club, you looked like an equal.

So why did you drop him again?

Alexis deserves better than that. While we all may hate Robin “the Python” van Persie and Cesc “Snake” Fabregas, when Alexis leaves, there will be no hatred. We are witnessing reason after reason why he should leave.

And when you have more reasons to leave than stay, then what’s keeping you? Alexis changed the way the game was played. The entire team looked different. They looked effective. Yet he was benched. And guys like Alex Iwobi and Francis Coquelin are still poddling around out there every single match.

Makes no sense. With three months left in the season, Alexis’s list of reasons to stay is being whittled down.
