Arsenal nation is pretty enthused by the idea of Massimiliano Allegri coming to town, but is that as realistic a proposition as we think? Perhaps not.

Arsenal is falling apart lately, as they sit 16 points behind league leaders Chelsea in the Premier League and they were bounced 10-2 on aggregate in the Champions League by Bayern Munich. Those aren’t the kinds of results that you get from big clubs.

Which raises the question of whether Arsenal truly are still a big club.

Arsene Wenger has hit a point of stagnation, but he remains because of his past of success and innovation. He also remains because of the stability that be brings the board. We may call it stagnation, but they call it consistency.

As such, the burst of rumors tying Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri to Arsenal struck a chord. Here is a manager who pushes the envelope, he is never satisfied and he just wants to keep trying harder and getting better and better.

That sounds pretty nice to us fans. But what concerns me is how it must sound to the board. This board is thrilled with how “their team” is doing. I would reckon not a wink of sleep was lost when “their club” utterly crumbled at Liverpool and at home against Bayern Munich.

That isn’t why they are here. If you need more proof of that, look at what they’ve done lately and the horrible public relations nightmare it would logically cause.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

First, Sir Chips Keswick tells the world that he will not pay Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez what they want. Supposedly “what they want” is around £200,000+, also known as exactly what the other best players in England make.

They don’t want to be “held hostage” by these superstars. It’s some rough logic, but this is what we are dealing with.

This statement was made hand in hand with the release of Arsenal’s massive turn of profit. The timing really couldn’t have been worse. “Look at all this money we made, but don’t worry, we won’t use that money to secure the best player we have had in a decade.”

This mentality got me thinking about whether or not the board would even be interested in a manager like Allegri, who holds nothing back. He will do whatever it takes to win – and win big. That may require money. In fact, that will require money and it will require going all out after big time signings.

The kinds of signings that that Arsenal board is not known to be fans of.
