Mesut Ozil is being linked with a move to Manchester United. Arsene Wenger cannot let the Arsenal midfielder to become Robin van Persie 2.0.

Given the vicious competition at the top of the Premier League – there are currently six worthy sides fighting for just four Champions League places – it is natural to expect the stars to be linked with moves away from their respective clubs, especially if their club, as Arsenal are, are underperforming.

As time passes, it is becoming increasingly likely that Alexis Sanchez will leave by the end of the year. The Chilean has grown more and more frustrated with life at the Emirates at the season has progressed, showing his disappointment in a mire of strops and tantrums on the sidelines on numerous occasions.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

However, there are also rumours that other stars may look for a North London exit in the summer. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has suggested that he would like to pursue pastures new, Lucas Perez has become, justifiably, disillusioned with his limited game time, while the futures of Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs and Wojciech Szczesny are still up in the air.

The latest name to be linked with an exit, though, is Mesut Ozil, and the possible destination is rather worrying. Per reports on Tuesday, Jose Mourinho is considering a swoop for the German playmaker. While is is usually unexpected to see Arsene Wenger to sell to a direct rival such as Manchester United, in this circumstance, he may not have a choice, as history suggests.

In the summer of 2012, after a meteoric 18 months in which he had established as a truly world-class finisher, scoring 30 Premier League goals in the previous campaign, Robin van Persie departed for Manchester United thanks to the power that he held in the negotiations given that his contract had just a year to run.

That is exactly the scenario that Ozil faces this summer. Unfortunately for Arsenal, thanks to their unwillingness to match the German’s rather significant wage demands and his repeated delaying of talks, it is Ozil who holds all the power. In a year, he can walk to any club he chooses and the Gunners will receive not one jot.

If there are more clubs than just United interested, Wenger must accept other offers for his midfield star. Even if it means less money for the club, Ozil cannot be allowed to be Robin van Persie 2.0. We all remembered how that ended up, right?
