Fenerbache have emerged as a possible destination for Mesut Ozil. If he leaves Arsenal for the Turkish club, it would confirm all of his shortcomings.

The departure of star players is something to be expected in the competitive world of modern football. Star players are in high demand and there is a lack of supply. Arsenal have been lucky enough to acquire the services of two of the upper echelon footballers from around the world over the past few seasons.

The acquisition of Mesut Ozil in the summer of 2013 was a groundbreaking one. Just a year after Robin van Persie departed in controversial circumstances for Manchester United, Arsene Wenger was determined to make an impact in the transfer window.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Just a year later he added Alexis Sanchez to his midst and the trajectory of the club was most certainly an upwards one. However, since then, progress has stalled somewhat and the ambition of the star duo, particularly the latter, has seemingly not been replicated by Wenger and the club. As such, significant rumours are linking both with a move away from North London, with the latest report heralding Fenerbache as a possible destination for Arsenal’s genius German.

Should such a move come to fruition, it would be degrading for the reputation of the club. The Turkish club, while successful domestically, are a significant step down from the qualities of his current side, particularly in Europe. It would be a rather substantial blow for Arsenal to lose a player of Ozil’s calibre to a club of Fenerbache’s standing.

Perhaps, though, while it would not be a particularly encouraging sign for the Gunners, the move would reveal more about Ozil’s character than the club’s issues. Ozil has, in a six-month period, has mysteriously missed games due to illness, looked lethargic and apathetic on the biggest stage, all while demanding rather eye-watering wages as his contract dwindles down.

His lack of mental fortitude, his lack of a winning attitude, his seeming lack of care or desire or fight have justifiably been called into question thanks to a series of underwhelming displays. Succumbing to a club of the quality of Fenerbache would confirm all of these shortcomings.

Ozil is a divisive figure, one that is difficult to decipher thanks to his languid style, intermixed with moments of sheer brilliance. However, questions persist regarding his will to win at the highest level. Should he leave for Fenerbache, it would answer those questions with a resounding yes.
