Arsenal watched as Hector Bellerin emphatically shot down every single rumor tying him to Barcelona. But that show is over. The new show is less fun.

Arsenal is approaching a danger zone this summer where handfuls of players may look to cut their losses and get out if Arsene Wenger does too. After all, why would they want to actually have to fight for a position when they haven’t had to since they came to the Emirates?

Hector Bellerin hasn’t really had to fight for his position since establishing himself, but we should have no complaints there. He is one of the best at what he does. And that is going to attract a lot of attention.

Which was never a problem before. Bellerin was always prompt in coming out and shooting down links to Barcelona, even making light of it. The Spaniard audaciously said that if Barcelona called him, he would hang up.

This dude was all Arsenal. And it was Arsene Wenger who we had to thank for it.

Unfortunately though, it’s looking like we will have Wenger to curse for it when Bellerin inevitably leaves for the Catalans on Le Prof’s departure.

“The loyalty one has to a person is worth more than money, it is something that is very important for me. And him being there carries a lot of weight for me,” Bellerin said of Wenger’s supposed exit.

Nothing too ridiculous there. But what Bellerin had to say next is what got me all flustered.

“Yes, any player would have interest in Barcelona. They are the best club in the world and that is something really special,” he said. “The fact that I grew up in Barcelona’s academy also gives the idea even more a bit of being special. Now, though, I am focused on the matches remaining this season, not on what might come later. I am very flattered.”

No wait, it keeps going.

“But no one knows what the future holds and you can never close any doors. It is a position that we are evaluating, there are many options and we will decide what we think is the best,” he said. “If the market helps us, we will always try to improve, why not?”

All of this coming just days after Barcelona openly admitted to be in pursuit of Bellerin.

Perhaps it is a product of him being young and immature, but perhaps he should be less obvious in what he is trying to do. For two years he vehemently shot down all ties to Barcelona, not even entertaining the idea.

He dug a hole into Arsenal and buried himself (in a good way), setting himself up like a Gunner for life.

Now he is not only not shooting down the idea, but he is openly entertaining it. After all, anyone would be interested in Barcelona, right? Despite what he said about hanging up on them.

Not the best time to see Bellerin extricating himself out of the fervent Gunner pride he had not so long ago.
