Arsenal: Alexis Sanchez Can’t Do Anymore For This Club

Arsenal may be resigned to losing Alexis Sanchez but, if there were ever any misconstrued doubts that he wants to be here, dismiss them.

Arsenal’s spirits may well have been pre-crushed as the opening whistle blew against Manchester City, but it couldn’t really get more embarrassing than when the club “forgot to celebrate” Shkodran Mustafi‘s equalizer in the second half.

In the midst of forgetting (only four guys followed Mustafi to the celebration) Alexis Sanchez could be seen furiously summoning his team mates to come celebrate.

You’ve all seen this by now, but it still stands out as a massive, eye-opening moment. As if our eyes couldn’t be opened anymore.

Keep in mind that this was Alexis Sanchez. The guy everyone thinks wants to leave. Angry at his team mates for not celebrating a pretty important goal.

Of course, after he was chummy with Pep Guardiola after the match, the doomsday tellers were out in mass, saying that Alexis was destined to join Manchester City.

If moves were solidified by chumminess, Arsenal would have had Antoine Griezmann three years ago.

The fact that Alexis Sanchez had to erupt on his team mates for such a stupid thing is just another sign that the Chilean wants to be here. And honestly, we have never had any reason to doubt that other than the speculation that runs rampant all day, every day.

It’s just another thing on the laundry list. And the list is getting rather long. From telling the club to invest in him to admitting that he would love to stay in London, the motive is clearly there. He has tantrums, sure, but those are bred from frustration at the club (that he is quite fond of) not living up to their expectations.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

As an individual, I don’t think there is anything else Alexis can do for this club. Or to prove that he wants to be be here. Or to prove that he knows this club is better than what they are letting on.

Everybody needs a supporting cast. Everyone needs players around them with a shared mindset and belief system. Without that, it ends up with those few believers banging their heads against the wall as everyone else sucks the life out of the club.

Alexis keeps on believing. He keeps trying to do it all himself and it’s become obvious that by himself, he can’t lift this club anymore than he already has. Similar to my argument for Granit Xhaka, if you want to see Alexis truly blossom, surround him with the right people. It’s a puzzle, but it’s part of the fun of running a team – making sure that every player is used to the best of their abilities.

Against West Ham, we saw again how influential Alexis can be even when he isn’t tallying up the stats. With Mesut Ozil back in fine form, there was a resurgence of their partnership and it served as an ample reminder of how much better this team can be with the right mindset and personnel.

There are tons of teams tracking Alexis for a summer transfer, but if he does leave, I hope that it can be remembered that he was very open about how much he wanted to be here.
