The story now goes that Alexis Sanchez is willing to give Arsenal one more shot. Conveniently, all he needs is one more year with the club.

The Alexis Sanchez has gotten significantly more positive since Arsenal thumped West Ham, although, to be fair, all speculation that he “wanted” to leave never turned into anything more than trivial rumors. The Chilean has always maintained that he wants to stay and win here in London.

Now, the story is shifting to Alexis wanting just one more year to see if the Gunners can pull out that trophy that they just can’t manage to find. That major trophy that has eluded them for over a decade.

That time frame is very convenient, because one more year is all this club needs with Alexis to convince him to stay beyond.

2018 is pretty much the end of times for this era of Arsenal, one way or another. Half the team has contracts running up in 2018 and if the narrative on Arsene Wenger holds true, he will only have one more year as well. If he wins, he retires a champion, if not, well he will probably step down anyway.

For Alexis, this should seem like the perfect situation. Wenger knows, probably for the first time since his early years, that he has to produce something or the club is going to go bottom’s up and whoever comes to manage next is going to be left with nothing.

So, this summer should be exciting, entertaining and revolutionary.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

I’m always wary to buy into what Wenger and Ivan Gazidis say, but they are both saying some pretty convincing things about the changes that are coming. Wenger has been hinting at an active summer and Gazidis was actually pretty adamant that if Wenger wants to stay, he needs to be a catalyst of change.

That is a convincing story that, if followed through on, would be plenty to launch Arsenal to the forefront.

Of course, there are only a million things that could go wrong, as usual, but the added impetus of it being Wenger’s last year (and probably many others) makes for an added motivation that we know this club could always use.

The point is that Alexis would actually be kind of foolish to bail on the club now. Right in the wake of some major changes, some added motivation and a growing core of the club (Xhaka, Mustafi) that is actually hungry for results?

I know it’s the same old story of “we will get them next year” but something just feels like this summer, with how many players are available, we are going to see a huge shift and Alexis will be sitting there with Humbert and Atom, smiling as he locks himself into a new contract.
