David Ospina has stated that he will leave Arsenal if a fee can be agreed. An exit for the Colombian is sensible for all parties involved.

Arsene Wenger has, slowly, quietly but effectively, assembled a deep and varied squad. In many positions, Arsenal are far stronger than they were just one or two years ago, blessed with quality in their reserve options and a multitude of options from off of the bench to change the game late on.

Players that have been considered entrenched starters in recent years have been resigned to little more than bit part throughout the season. Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all started only when injuries have come to other members of the squad. That is a sign of great depth.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Another position that boasts a variety of options os goalkeeper. Last summer, Wenger allowed Wojciech Szczesny to spend the season out on loan, such was the strength of his squad. Petr Cech is the undoubted number one, with Colombian David Ospina used as the primary backup, starting in cup and European games.

Ospina, though, is the calibre of player above that of a glorified reserve. Although issues remain regarding his ability to command his area, often struggling to be dominant in claiming set pieces and crosses, he is an excellent shot-stopper with great experience at both club and international level. And Ospina has expressed a desire to leave the club in the summer, clearly frustrated with his limited opportunities:

"“Istanbul may be a new adventure and motivation for me. If my club are persuaded, it’s okay for me.”"

It is fair of Ospina to want a move away from North London. He has the quality deserving of a starting role at an established European side and will not find that at Arsenal with Cech set to continue in his role as the starter and Szczesny still to return from his second successive loan season at Roma.

With the decreasing chances to play, his growing itch to prove his quality at the top level and the potential for Wenger to invest the money elsewhere, it is seemingly more and more sensible for Ospina to be sold this summer.

Fenerbache are reportedly willing buyers, for the right price, and Ospina is clearly wanting to leave. Moreover, Szczesny perhaps has the greater potential for the future and is more likely to be Arsenal’s long-term starter. With Cech the more short-term option, there is no room for Ospina and a summer sale is looking wiser and wiser.
