Arsenal is being pushed towards a busy transfer summer on all fronts, and the clock is already ticking in the pursuit of Leon Goretzka.

Arsenal’s midfield is a rotating door that just never stops. It’s clear that Arsene Wenger wants Granit Xhaka to be the center piece of the whole shebang, but that involves finding him an ample partner or swapping formations.

Given Mesut Ozil’s (likely) stay, the 4-2-3-1 is bound to stay, meaning that the only viable solution is to find him a reliable comrade.

Mohamed Elneny came out strong against West Ham and showed what the partnership had to be. But the Egyptian has done this before. He has looked incredibly inspired only to come out soon after and look like he was playing with ankle weights.

Banking on Elneny isn’t only unsafe, it is unnecessary.

Especially when someone like Leon Goretzka is openly available. The German’s agent has admitted that his client’s future is still up in the air, but then he also went on to admit that no official approach has been made by Arsenal.

There’s no reason to hit the panic button at hearing that, because the transfer window isn’t even open for another few months, but there is reason to look around with a confused look.

Mainly because the clock is already ticking. Goretzka is holding off on a contract and he hasn’t decided his future. If the Gunners were going to go after the guy, having a word in his ear would be a pretty wise options.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

I think of how they landed Xhaka. Wenger had been courting the Swiss for a full year before finally convincing him.

Goretzka needs to at least hear of Arsenal’s interest and have it in his head that a move to the Emirates is distinctly possible. Let him fantasize a bit before other teams come swooping in, courting him. And they will come. Because the lad is a talent factory, capable of being an all-purpose midfielder that could grow into a masterclass.

Xhaka needs a partner who is tireless, works every inch of the pitch, and gives the Swiss his space to do his thing. It’s what Elneny provided against West Ham and it’s what Goretzka has proven capable of doing at FC Schalke. He has the size and athleticism to be a consistent midfield partner for Xhaka and if he struggles at first well, that’s why we have Elneny. A little rivalry.

The midfield has to be addressed with Santi Cazorla‘s and Jack Wilshere‘s unsure futures and Aaron Ramsey‘s impossible-to-guess form. Goretzka is young, immensely talented, and has everything we could want.
