Arsenal Supporters Trust have stated that 78% of their members want Arsene Wenger to leave the club in the summer. Is that an overreaction or is it fair?

The talk of the Arsenal town is indeed the future of Arsene Wenger. Should he stay or should he go? If he leaves, should he do so immediately or should it be at the end of the season? If he stays, should it be for one year or two years? Should it have a clause in which infrastructures will be put in place for his eventual departure or should he be given free reign of everything the club does?

It has been a topic of conversation that has lingered on for many years. There has been great division within the fan base regarding it. There has been great certainty in the media. You are either ‘Wenger In’ or ‘Wenger Out’. Unusually for such a controversial footballing issue, there is seemingly no grey, middle ground.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

And now, the Arsenal Supporters Trust (AST) have had their say on whether Wenger should indeed stay or go. Speaking with Sky Sports News, after the 3-0 loss to Palace succumbed the Gunners to their fourth successive away defeat in the Premier League, conceding three goals in all four of them, leaving them seven points behind the top four, AST board member Akhil Vyas stated that 78% of the members, after undertaking a survey, wanted Wenger to leave:

"“We’ve recently announced our results from an Arsenal Supporters Trust survey from all our members on the future of Arsene Wenger, and 78 per cent have decided that it is time for Arsene to leave the football club in the summer. Only about three percent called for him to leave right now, so 78 percent think it’s time.”"

More than any point in history, there is now a majority of the fanbase who want Wenger to leave the club. I am, increasingly tentatively, still wanting Wenger to stay with the club. Perhaps that is more out of selfish desire for Arsenal to win one last title under the great man, however unlikely that may seem. But that is nonetheless my belief.

Having said that, his position at the club is becoming more and more untenable, more and more difficult to defend, and it is wholly justified to want him to leave in the summer with a shake-up of the whole club, from the playing squad to the makeup and the structure of the board.

These are indeed turbulent times for Arsenal and their fans and uncertainty and division are perhaps the most prevalent feelings engulfing the club at this time. However, whether you are ‘Wenger In’ or ‘Wenger Out’, what we can all agree on is that change is needed for this club to thrive once more.
