Paul Merson has stated that Arsene Wenger will announce his future at the end of the season. Unfortunately for Arsenal, a proclamation cannot come soon enough.

This is the worst run of form that Arsenal have toiled through during the 21-year tenure of their current manager. Arsene Wenger has masterminded great success at this club, especially in the early years. But now, he may well be facing his sternest test and stiffest resistance.

The Gunners have won just three games in all competitions since February 11th, two of which came against non-league opposition in the FA Cup and the other at home to a languishing West Ham side crippled by injuries and engulfed by struggling form. And still, there seems to be little light at the end of the tunnel.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The three-goal loss to Crystal Palace last Monday was a particularly low point for the club and the fans. Entering the second half in desperate need of a win and a goal down, the side proceeded to show no fight or desire to try and win the game whatsoever. They were uncommitted in tackles, they were lazy in their defending and seemingly unmoved by the humiliation. They were, as many fans rightly chanted on the night, unfit to wear the shirt.

And with Wenger’s contract expiring at the end of the season, it has led to many to call for him to leave after a spiralling-out-of-control few seasons. The word on the street, though, would suggest that Wenger is set to extend his stay with the club. If true, the question then becomes how do the club release such information to a crowd baying for his head. Paul Merson, working with Sky Sports, has stated that he believes the club will not do it until the end of the season:

"“At the end of the season, when all the fans have gone home. It’s as simple as that.”"

If true, and I do agree with Merson’s assessment of the rather dire situation, then that is extremely damaging for the short term prospects of the team. The uncertainty that has shrouded the club is clearly affecting the players, their mental attitudes and their motivation heading into games.

If a decision regarding Wenger’s future has already been made, and I suspect that that is the case, then an announcement from Wenger and the club cannot come soon enough. While there are many issues with the infrastructure at Arsenal, from board level to the playing squad, nothing can be addressed until there is transparency regarding the future of the most important man at the club.

Whether you ascribe yourself to the ‘Wenger In’ or ‘Wenger Out’ camp, as if they are the only two stances that one can take as an Arsenal fan, what cannot be questioned is that uncertainty is killing this club from the inside out. Revelation is needed. And quickly.
