Arsenal have reportedly come to an agreement to sign Sead Kolasinac in the summer. The Bosnian left-back, though, must only be the start to Arsene Wenger’s recruitment.

It has undoubtedly been a viciously underwhelming season for Arsenal. Entering the year, expectations differed greatly. Some suggested that a league title was the minimum while others were happy for another top-four finish and a trophy. Although the latter is still a slight possibility, it is difficult to envisage any fan being happy with how the season has played out.

As such, with the year now drawing to a close and perspectives shifting towards the future, there is a hope and anticipation that Arsene Wenger, if he does indeed remain as manager as is expected,  will invest heavily in the squad, bringing much-needed change and freshness to what is quickly becoming a stagnating group.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

And there is good news for those hoping for such investment. This week, it was reported that Arsenal are set to sign Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer from Schalke at the end of the season once his current contract expires. The reports are certainly positive news for the Gunners as Kolasinac is a quality player satisfying a need as Nacho Monreal continues to toil and Kieran Gibbs fails to fulfil his potential.

However, there are far more areas in which the squad are in need of improvement. Kolasinac may well qbe an astute addition, if the deal is completed, but he will not singlehandedly revolutionise a squad that suffers from as many holes as Arsenal’s does.

There is a glaring absence of a defensive shield sitting in front of the back four, there is a need for a commanding, dominating centre-half, a sharp-shooting centre-forward and an electric, creative wide man, especially if Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil do leave in the summer with their contracts winding down.

There are options that could be available in the summer. Alexandre Lacazette has been linked with a move to North London on a number of occasions; Antoine Griezmann is rarely far from the lips of an Arsenal fan when touting possible transfer targets; Virgil van Dijk is the rock that many hang their defensive hopes on.

Certainly, there is still much work for Wenger and his staff to do. Kolasinac is a good signing at a position of need. But if, like Petr Cech two summers ago, he is the only addition to the squad, then the Gunners will be in dire trouble.
