Arsenal and Lucas Perez are yet again being tied to a separation after just one year. Was everyone equally duped by this seemingly intelligent transfer?

When you look at what made Lucas Perez’s move to Arsenal, everything seems to make perfect sense. The Gunners needed a striker and no world class players were available. Therefore all of the ‘good enough’ strikers had inflated prices because they were the best available.

Lucas only cost £17m. He fit the billing of what Arsene Wenger would want. He was a fantastic passer, a solid finisher and he was cheap. Sold on all three counts.

From Lucas’s point of view, he had always had the talent to be special, he was just always caught in crowded systems. So here comes Arsenal, a team known for giving guys chances, and they want to give him a spot on their team. Not only that, but they obviously need a striker.

Everything makes sense. It all fits together like a far-too-easy jigsaw puzzle. Everyone got what they wanted.

Who could have expected that it would all fall apart? And after so short a period of time. Again, that is assuming the Spaniard is leaving.

We went from having a transfer that made complete sense on every level to having a transfer that has fallen apart on every level, as no one got what they wanted.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Lucas didn’t get his starring role, he barely even got a chance. Clearly Wenger didn’t get what he wanted or he would have been more dedicated to getting Lucas more time.

I guess the only party involved that got what they needed is the team. They got a striker who contributed to goals at a fantastic rate, he just never got an extended chance to be a bigger deal.

Somehow it feels like everyone got duped. Which is a massive shame because all we can do is look at this and wonder what could have been. There is so much within the move that seemed to work that it was almost impossible to see it fail. Yet as the summer sneaks up on us, that is exactly what seems to have happened.

Lucas is reportedly the most keen to head back to his previous club, Deportivo La Coruna. In the process, at the very least, hopefully he learned something, and not just that Arsene Wenger can be frustrating.

Anyway, this is all worst case scenario. There is still a good chance that Lucas will give it another go.
