Arsenal: Robert Pires Kylian Mbappe Dream Unattainable
Robert Pires has stated that he expects Arsenal to sign Kylian Mbappe. Such a dream, though, seems unattainable and unrealistic.
The summer transfer window is looming and Arsene Wenger has much work to do. After perhaps his worst period throughout his 21-year tenure at Arsenal, there are growing calls for him to leave at the end of the season with his contract set to expire.

And the arguments supporting his case are very quickly thinning. His standing at the club is weakening, his lack of tactical nous is being exposed, especially against the top sides, and there is a great need for investment in the squad.

That last point is particularly impactful. Wenger has long been criticised for his unwillingness and hesitancy to invest heavily in the transfer window. However, in recent years, that has not been the case. He spent £42 million on Mesut Ozil; he spent £35 million on Alexis Sanchez; he totalled nearly £100 million on new players this last summer. And yet, the squad is still in need of some serious improvements. One man who has been linked with a move to the Emirates is young, Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe.
Wenger himself has acknowledged interest in the player, though tempered expectations with the admittance that other clubs may price him out of the market. But Robert Pires is more confident than his former manager. When asked about the link between Mbappe and the North London club, Pires said he expected a deal to be done:
"“I do think Arsenal will sign him. The problem is how much. Mbappe has the potential to play for Arsenal and Wenger is the right manager to manage him. I hope that Kylian can follow in the footsteps of Thierry Henry, he has the same profile as Thierry – quick, strong and a great finisher but he’s very young so I would hold off on comparisons just yet.”"
While that is a lovely dream to hold, it seems a little unrealistic and a little unattainable. Firstly, as Wenger rightly states, he could well be outbid by a number of different clubs who are considering pursuing the French prodigy. But more than mere money, if the Gunners do not qualify for the Champions League, there is the very real possibility that Mbappe does not want to move.

Certainly, Mbappe would be a ground-shaking, game-changing addition, one that could significantly alter the future of the club. But to expect it to happen, how wonderful it may be, seems a tad naive to me.
