Rumours are circling that Barcelona are proposing a swap deal with Arsenal involving Arda Turan. The Turkish winger, though, does not come close to compensation for Barca target, Hector Bellerin.

With Arsenal being out of the Champions League for the first time in Arsene Wenger’s tenure, it is expected that there will be a certain buzz surrounding many of their better, more established players, players that perhaps are of the quality and stature that suggests they should be featuring in Europe’s elite club competition.

It is, for many footballers, the be all and end all. Alexandre Lacazette declared that he would only sign for a club in the Champions League; both Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku have stated of their desire to leave Everton because of the ceiling that the Merseyside club is unable to break through, a ceiling that never sees them qualify for the Champions League.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The desire to test yourself at the highest possible level is a natural one for all humans of all walks of life. It is no different as a professional sportsman. That is why the rumours of a number of departures from Arsenal exist. They are no longer in the Champions League.

One of the more prominent names to be linked with an exit is Hector Bellerin. The energetic right-back has been a target for Barcelona for some time, and thanks to his boyhood ties with the Catalan club, there is significant reason to think that he would be interested in returning, more so than the Champions League and Barca element that usually engulfs potential transfers.

If Arsenal are forced to sell because, for example, Bellerin is desperate to make the move and makes life extremely difficult to try and force through the deal, then the priority for Wenger and the club then becomes a matter of value: what is the maximum that you can receive in return for a talented, accomplished, experienced 22-year-old right back?

Well, some reports suggest that Arda Turan, and a little bit of cash, is the answer to that question; that is, a 30-year-old, unwanted winger who has struggled to forge a role for himself and has, at best, two years of his prime remaining. It would have to be a whole lot of cash to make this deal fair.

Turan is nowhere near the calibre of player sufficient to act as compensation for losing Bellerin. The Spanish defender is younger, better and has a much greater sell-on value. Selling Bellerin would be a dastardly move, but if it has to be done, then getting the right price is essential.
