Alexis Sanchez is seemingly edging towards a move to Manchester City. The bombshell is just the same old sh*t as Arsenal and Arsene Wenger fail to keep hold of their star players once again.

The narrative of Alexis Sanchez’s season is coming to a climax. And it’s not a positive one for Arsenal. The Chilean has been the star of the Gunners’ show, scoring 24 Premier League goals and adding a further 10 assists to only bolster his claim as the shining light of a stagnating, dimming squad.

However, while his performances on the pitch have only taken an upwards trajectory, his happiness off of it has not. He has grown visibly frustrated with life at the Emirates, barking orders at his teammates, gesticulating incessantly at the lack of a pressing game, fighting in training.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Sanchez, although he has been instrumental, has not been happy, and has been inching towards an exit with every flail of his arms. And with the summer transfer window now in full beam, the rumours surrounding his possible departure have hit overdrive. There have been a host of different clubs linked with a move for the attacker, from Juventus to Chelsea, but perhaps the most worrying of them all is Manchester City.

The domestic rivalry that Arsenal have, you would have thought, would restrict City from ever being a realistic destination for Sanchez. Why would you ever allow your best player to join a direct rival with the danger that they go on to inspire them to success ahead of yourself?

That is a question that is extremely difficult to answer, especially after the Robin van Persie nightmare of 2012. Arsene Wenger was insistent that van Persie would not leave the club that summer. Not only did van Persie leave, but it was Manchester United that were the benefactors of Arsenal’s contract cock-up.

The very next year, van Persie would proceed to fire United to Sir Alex Ferguson’s last title with 26 goals, forming a vicious partnership with Wayne Rooney. It was a disastrous turn of events for the Gunners and has plagued the minds of the fans ever since. It was a clear mistake from Wenger and the club, one that should be learned from.
